That is so ironic. An hour ago I had some of these same thoughts running through my head... about rap and hip-hop (how I realized its place in music and the validity and how American it really is, Dad's records, Randy's Dad's punk, Pearl Jam (and how their changes effected me personally), of course my, or should I say "The METAL!", Then later club and industrial. Of course I could go on and on with my classical and folk days as well as pop mixed in throughout. NIN Closer has a special place in my heart too. The middle school days always suck; you just cannot escape the torture with all the hormones, sugar, awkward sex pressure, beatings, and glorious music. It is funny how you mentioned the hating High School thing; I certainly did. I couldn't stand the "box" you know? The ridiculous little world of public school in general forced to "fit" together in a surreal light security prison like soup. I am familiar though with not being able to ignore the academics of it all, if it interested me, which I admit was rare. Nothing like your achievements in that category for certain, but I needed to get out in 4 years only, no more than that!
